COLONEL THOMAS BAKER CHAPTER

The Colonel Thomas Baker Chapter was organized March 27, 2024 and chartered July 20, 2024. The chapter holds its meetings on the 3rd Friday in February and September.

The Colonel Thomas Baker Chapter XVIIC had its beginnings because of the persuasion from CA State President Joan Bogaty (2024-2026) to Linda Adams, who ultimately became the Organizing President. At the time Linda was a member of Valley of the Mist Chapter in Riverside County, some 200+ miles from her home in Bakersfield. She joined there because of a close friendship.

Joan’s persuasions prevailed as the closest chapters to Bakersfield were slightly over 100 miles away. And with Linda being the registrar of her DAR chapter, she had a wealth of genealogical information about members who might be interested.

After receiving formal approval to form a new chapter, a few women, already members, gathered during the summer of 2023 with a prospective member. We brainstormed about the chapter formation, how often to meet and came up with the name - Colonel Thomas Baker Chapter. The name totally made sense as it is named after our city’s namesake. The prospective member in attendance was Vicci Snyder who was very enthusiastic about her possibility of membership. Linda and she collaborated on Vicci’s application and after it was approved in October 2023, she appointed chapter registrar. Fast forward to our first true organization meeting on March 27, 2024, with several new members in attendance, chapter offices were discussed, arms were twisted, and committee positions were appointed.

During this planning meeting we knew we were to support the national and state society goals and projects. We, however, did adopt a special philanthropic project – that being to help support animal services here in Kern County.

Registrar General Kay McIntyre presented Vicci with a challenge to beat a chapter from VA with their 32 charter members. The challenge was accepted and surpassed. On July 20, 2024, we became a chartered chapter with 33 charter members! Attending the Charter ceremony (pictured above) were Chapter President Linda Adams, State President Joan Bogaty and Registrar General Kay McIntire.
